Balloons Over Mildura: winter skies, big colour, and a pretty special week in July

There are a few things that just fit our patch of the world: crisp winter mornings, glassy river views… and hot air balloons drifting silently over the region like they own the sky.

This July, Balloons Over Mildura is back for a full week of ballooning action, running Saturday 4 to Sunday 12 July 2026

And it’s not just a pretty show for the camera either — the program is set up as a serious competition week, with the event hosting Round 2 of the FAI Australian Grand Prix (a national-level series that brings elite pilots to town).

What you’ll actually see (and why it’s so good)

If you’ve never watched a balloon launch properly, here’s the magic:

  • Pre-dawn glow as burners fire up (it’s like a dragon waking up).

  • A line-up of balloons inflating and standing tall.

  • Then, one by one, they lift off and float quietly over farms, river bends, and rooftops.

Because it’s winter, the air is often calmer — and that can mean better flying conditions. (Still: ballooning is always weather-dependent, so flexibility is part of the deal.)

Best way to enjoy it as a spectator

You don’t need a ticket to enjoy the viewing — the simplest plan is:

  1. Set the alarm (yes, I know… but trust me).

  2. Head out while it’s still dark and you’ll catch the full launch vibe.

  3. Bring a coffee, rug, and something warm — those July mornings bite, even for us locals.

If you’re trying to photograph it, sunrise is your best friend: soft light, bright colours, and that iconic winter sky.

Want to ride in one?

If getting up early to watch sounds good… getting up early to float is even better.

These weeks usually come with limited flight availability through operators, and spots can go quickly when the dates are locked in. Keep an eye on the official event updates closer to July.

Why this is a big deal for the region

Events like this don’t just look good — they’re a genuine tourism win. A whole week of ballooning brings visitors in for multiple days, which means full rooms, busy cafés, and plenty of people exploring the riverfront, wineries, and nearby towns while they’re here. That wider tourism and economic boost is a big part of why the 2026 program is being talked up.

Quick tips from a local

  • Dress like it’s colder than you think (because it is).

  • Bring a torch if you’re heading out pre-dawn.

  • Be respectful around launch areas and follow any directions from crew.

  • Don’t stress if a session gets cancelled — it’s part of ballooning, and they’ll fly when it’s safe.

If you’re chasing one of those “only in Mildura” experiences to show off to friends back home, this is it. I’ll share more specifics (viewing spots, times, and any special events around it) as we get closer.
