Mildura to Wentworth Day Trip

This is a big-but-doable day trip with plenty of variety packed into the run between Mildura and Wentworth.

Start with a Murray River view from above at Merbein Lookout, step back into Wentworth's early history at the Old Wentworth Gaol, take a quick riverside detour to Lock & Weir No. 10, then finish among the dunes at Perry Sandhills.

It is a good mix of river country, local history and one of the most distinctive landscapes around Wentworth.

Best way to tackle the day

There is no need to rush this one. Give yourself time at each stop and, if you can, leave Perry Sandhills until later in the afternoon when the light is softer and the temperature is usually a bit easier.

River views

Stop 1: Merbein Lookout

Kick the day off with a panoramic view across the Murray River country and surrounding irrigation district. It is a great first photo stop and a handy way to get your bearings before heading toward Wentworth.

Local history

Stop 2: Old Wentworth Gaol

The Old Wentworth Gaol gives you a good feel for how tough — and fascinating — early river-town life could be. Give yourself a little time to wander through and take in the stories before moving on.

Murray River engineering

Stop 3: Lock & Weir No. 10

This is an easy riverside detour and well worth adding to the run. You can see the river engineering up close and it is a good spot to stretch the legs beside the Murray before heading out toward the sandhills.

Best late afternoon

Stop 4: Perry Sandhills

Save this one for later in the day if you can. The dunes are a complete change from the river landscape you have been following all day and make for one of the strongest photo stops around Wentworth.

Late afternoon usually gives you softer light, cooler conditions and more definition across the sand — a good way to finish the trip before heading home.
