You know that feeling when the sun’s getting a bit cheeky, the river gums start whispering “summer’s nearly done,” and suddenly Saturday needs a plan? Yep.. lean into that.
One of my favourite little Sunraysia rituals is back on Saturday 21 February: the Sunraysia Farmers & Makers Market at Jaycee Park on Hugh King Drive, right along the mighty Murray. It’s the kind of morning where you can grab a coffee, have a wander, fill a bag (or three), and bump into half the region in the process.
And this time, I’ve got a little extra for you too — I filmed a ripper Out & About Sunraysia yarn with local metal art maker Nigel, one of those genuine makers who turns scrap steel and raw talent into proper “how good is this?” pieces. If you’ve ever stood at a stall thinking “I don’t need that… but I absolutely need that” — Nigel’s the bloke responsible for that feeling.
Why this market just works
If you haven’t already discovered it, this market is one of those simple-but-brilliant Sunraysia things: fresh local produce, local makers with heart and humor, and that riverside park vibe that basically tells you to slow down and have a yarn.
It usually runs on the first and third Saturday of each month, so this one’s a great excuse to lock in a low-stress Saturday plan.
I love it for a few reasons:
Local growers proudly showing off their best fruit, veg, and goodies you just can’t replicate with a supermarket dash.
Handmade crafts + boutique bits that make perfect gifts… or “accidental” gifts to yourself.
The setting — gum trees, river breeze, big sky, and that sweet spot of the morning where it’s warm but not “Mildura February has strong opinions” warm.
The best part is the people. Families wandering through with reusable bags swinging, kids on scooters, locals catching up with stallholders they’ve known for years and visitors blinking in surprise at just how good our local produce is.
What to expect on market day
Expect stalls loaded with:
Seasonal fresh fruit & veg
Jams, preserves, honey & chutneys
Fresh bread & sweet treats
Handmade soaps & candles
Local artwork & quirky giftware
And if you’re feeling peckish, this is the place to enjoy a casual brekky or snack under the gums with a coffee in hand... perfect right before or after a wander.
Local tips from yours truly
Get there early (around 8am) - best produce and tastiest treats don’t hang around.
Bring sun protection - hat, sunnies, sunscreen… February doesn’t mess about.
Pack a cooler bag if you’re grabbing chilled goods or doing a proper haul.
After you browse, wander toward the river - Jaycee Park has plenty of spots to sit, munch, and soak up the view.
I always walk away from this market feeling like I’ve done myself and my pantry a favor. Whether you’re visiting from out of town or live just up the road, it’s one of those perfect Saturday plans that feels so Sunraysia.
