Sometimes the best food stops are the ones you almost drive past.
Tucked away in Robinvale is a little Vietnamese takeaway that might just be serving up the best bánh mì in Sunraysia. Big call? Maybe. But after one bite, it’s a call I’m pretty comfortable making.
From the moment you walk through the door, you get the feeling this place is the real deal. There were several groups of Vietnamese locals sitting down, chatting away and enjoying food that, to my eyes, didn’t seem to appear anywhere on the menu.
That told me two things straight away.
First, the food must be good. When people who know the food, the flavours and the culture are choosing to eat there, that’s usually a pretty strong sign you’re in the right place.
Second, I’m fairly sure there might be two menus going on. One for people who know exactly what to ask for, and a simpler one for "Skippys" like me who walk in, point at the board and hope for the best.
But for me, that’s part of the charm.
I went with the bánh mì, and it was absolutely spot on. Fresh bread with that perfect crunch on the outside, soft enough inside to hold everything together, packed with flavour, freshness, herbs, pickled veg and that beautiful balance Vietnamese food does so well. Nothing fancy, nothing overdone — just a seriously good roll made properly.
Robinvale has long been one of those Sunraysia towns where different cultures, farming communities and food traditions all come together. This little takeaway is a great example of that. It’s multiculturalism not as a slogan, but as something you can taste. A small local business serving food with its roots somewhere else, now very much part of the local flavour of the region.
And that’s what I love about exploring Sunraysia and the Mallee. You never quite know where the next great feed is going to turn up. Sometimes it’s a pub meal, sometimes it’s a bakery pie, sometimes it’s a plate from a community event — and sometimes it’s a bánh mì in Robinvale that makes you wonder why you haven’t been stopping there for years.
So, is it the best bánh mì in Sunraysia?
I reckon it might be.
And next time, I might be brave enough to ask what everyone else was eating.
