I Really Didn’t Think You Could Find a Restaurant Like This in Broken Hill

I was in Broken Hill for work — and yes, despite what some people might think, I actually do have a job outside of Out & About Sunraysia.

Being a weekend trip, my wife came along for the ride, and on Saturday night we decided to head out for a decent feed.

We ended up at Trinders Restaurant at The Astra, right in the heart of Broken Hill. 

And I’ll admit it — I really didn’t think you could find a restaurant of this standard in Broken Hill.

It struck us pretty much as soon as we walked through the door.

The dining room looks fantastic. A deep blue ceiling with white and gold trim, polished timber floors and a chandelier hanging through the middle. It has a bit of class about it, but without becoming one of those places where you feel like you need to whisper.

Then the meals arrived.

I went with the Greek lamb rump, while my wife ordered the prosciutto-wrapped eye fillet.

And just have a look at them.

The lamb came with rosemary potatoes, zucchini ribbons, lentils and a rich demi glaze, while the eye fillet sat on a crispy potato and zucchini rosti with baby spinach, asparagus, feta cream and demi glaze.

Both were absolutely beautiful.

But the thing that probably impressed me most was that it wasn’t just the meat.

It’s pretty easy to cook a good piece of steak or lamb and then throw a few token vegetables beside it. These plates were different. The sides, sauces and everything else on there were every bit as good as the main event.

You actually wanted to eat the whole plate.

Trinders describes itself as serving Modern Australian food, with an à la carte menu built around fresh produce, and after eating there I can see exactly what they’re going for. 

For me, this wasn’t a case of saying, “That was pretty good for Broken Hill.”
It was just a great restaurant. Full stop.
Broken Hill keeps throwing up surprises, and Trinders at The Astra was definitely one of them.
