The future of the Mildura Life Saving Club building at Apex Park will be considered by Mildura Rural City Council this Thursday.
The existing building was badly damaged during the Murray River floods and subsequently deemed unsafe. Mildura Life Saving Club and Life Saving Victoria have since developed a proposal for a new facility costed at around $3 million.
The proposed redevelopment would include rescue equipment storage, toilets, showers and change rooms, a first aid room, training and education areas, patrol facilities, a small kitchen and a small kiosk.
Council officers are recommending a different approach — preparing plans for a smaller transportable building within or close to the existing footprint and based around the approximately $446,000 insurance settlement.
Officers are also recommending Council decline the current $3 million redevelopment proposal.
The Life Saving Club has already secured $200,000 in Victorian Government funding and has raised the possibility of further State or Federal Government funding, fundraising or developing the project in stages.
Councillors will consider the recommendation at the 24 September Council meeting.
If significantly more funding was secured, there is also the question of whether a larger redevelopment could include facilities that allow the wider community to make more use of the site.

The bigger question is whether Mildura should stick with a smaller, flood-ready replacement or continue pursuing funding for the larger redevelopment.
