There was plenty of action under lights at B&S Earthworks Timmis Speedway tonight, as the opening night of the Mildura Gateway $10K to Win Wingless Sprint Stampede delivered fast racing, some big crashes and plenty of contenders putting their hands up ahead of tomorrow night's conclusion.
Ten Wingless Sprint heats were followed by three preliminary finals, with Todd Moule, Blaine Densley and Australian No.1 Tyson Martin taking the three preliminary victories to round out the night.
Moule got proceedings underway with a comfortable victory in Heat 1, quickly establishing himself as one of the drivers to watch.
Heat 2 was a much more interrupted affair.
An accident on lap two brought out the first stoppage before another big incident involving Chadwick, Turner and Argus forced another restart.
After two restarts, Brett Ireland eventually came through to take the heat victory.
Things settled down for Heat 3, which ran from start to finish with Kirby Hillyer taking the win.
Australian No.1 Tyson Martin started Heat 4 from pole position, but after just one lap Blaine Densley had found his way past. Densley stayed out front for the remainder of the race to take the win, with the heat running uninterrupted from there to the chequered flag.
Heat 5 also ran cleanly from start to finish, with Michael Conlan comfortably taking the victory.
Austin McDonald was next to add his name to the winners list, taking out Heat 6 in another uninterrupted race.
Plenty of action as the heats continue
The crashes returned in Heat 7, with an accident on the second lap bringing the race to a halt. Once racing resumed, Wayne Logue eventually emerged with the win.
One of the biggest moments of the night came right at the beginning of the second lap of Heat 8 when Luke Weel rolled, bringing proceedings to an immediate stop.
Following the restart, Brad Warren went on to take the heat victory.
Australian No.1 Tyson Martin then added a heat win to his night by taking out Heat 9, before Angus Hollis produced an easy victory in Heat 10 to complete the opening round of racing.
Three preliminary winners emerge
With the ten heats completed, the Wingless Sprints returned for three preliminary finals to finish their Saturday night program.
Todd Moule backed up his comfortable Heat 1 victory by taking one of the preliminary wins.
Blaine Densley continued an impressive night of his own with victory in another, while Tyson Martin claimed the remaining preliminary.
That left three familiar names at the front of the action by the end of Saturday night — Moule, Densley and Martin — but the biggest race of the weekend is still to come.
Waters a standout in the Modifieds
The Wingless Sprints weren't the only cars providing the entertainment, with Modified Productions and Junior Sedans making up the support classes.
In the Modified Production final, Jarod Waters was the standout.
Waters put together a dominant drive to take the victory, with Peter “Spider” McCarthy coming home in second place.
The Junior Sedan final was won by Brodie Reichstein, rounding out another busy night of racing at Timmis.
After ten Wingless Sprint heats, three preliminary finals and plenty of action across the support classes, the opening night has set things up nicely for Sunday.
Tomorrow night, the Mildura Gateway Wingless Sprint Stampede returns to Timmis Speedway — and this time there's $10,000 waiting at the finish line.
