There will be an unusual sight rolling across the Mallee this weekend, with The Grainlander heritage train heading to Manangatang for one of the biggest weekends on the town's calendar.
The train will make the journey from Melbourne into the Mallee ahead of the Nutrien Ag Solutions Manangatang Cup this Saturday, 10 October, bringing visitors into a town whose population is about to increase dramatically.
For most of the year, Manangatang is home to around 250 people.
Come Cup weekend, the Manangatang Racing Club says that number swells to more than 2,000.
And this year, some of those visitors will be arriving in a rather different way.
The Grainlander rolls into the Mallee
The arrival of The Grainlander adds something a little different to this year's Cup weekend.
Passengers will leave Melbourne aboard the heritage sleeper train on Friday evening before travelling through the Goldfields and across the Mallee to Manangatang.
Once there, passengers have the option of spending Saturday at the Manangatang Cup or heading off to explore the Mallee, including an organised tour taking in the region's silo art.
For those choosing the races, arriving by heritage train should make for a pretty memorable way to start a day at one of Victoria's most distinctive country race meetings.
The train itself should also provide quite a sight as it makes its way through the Mallee and into Manangatang.

The Grainlander Manangatang CupA town of 250 becomes a town of more than 2,000
The Manangatang Cup has developed into much more than a day of horse racing.
Each year visitors travel from across the Mallee and much further afield, with the local population multiplying several times over during Cup weekend.
This Saturday's program includes country racing, Fashions on the Field, live entertainment and plenty happening around the racecourse throughout the day.
There will also be running races before the first horse race, giving competitors the opportunity to represent their local football or netball club.
Entertainment continues after the racing
The action won't finish when the final horse crosses the line.
Triple Fried will perform in the Big Shed, while Heidi Moncrieff will take over after the final race.
There's also entertainment in the Piano Bar Marquee with Joss Russell, The Piano Man.
The Big Shed has become an important part of Cup weekend, allowing racegoers to continue the celebrations into the evening.
Make a weekend of it
Another part of the Manangatang Cup experience is the ability to turn the event into a full Mallee weekend.
Free camping is available adjacent to the racecourse, with caravans, campervans, tents, utes and swags welcome.
Toilets and showers are available, although camping sites are unpowered.
A return bus service is also available from Swan Hill for those who don't want to drive.
General admission tickets are available in advance from $15, with a range of hospitality options also offered.
Some hospitality packages have already sold out as Cup Day approaches.
A big weekend for a little Mallee town
There's something pretty special about a community of around 250 people preparing to welcome more than 2,000 for one weekend.
Add a heritage passenger train rolling across the Mallee and into town, country racing, camping and live entertainment, and Manangatang should be a very different place this Saturday compared with an ordinary weekend.
The 2026 Nutrien Ag Solutions Manangatang Cup is on this Saturday, 10 October, at the Manangatang Racing Club in Sport Street, Manangatang.
And if you happen to be travelling through the Mallee this weekend, keep an eye on the railway line — The Grainlander is coming to town.
