A beloved piece of Mildura’s history — the K175 steam locomotive — could be relocated as part of Mildura Rural City Council’s bold new vision for a regional-level adventure playspace at Jaycee Park.
The potential removal of the locomotive is one of the key proposals now open for community feedback, as Council works to reimagine the popular riverfront park as a modern, family-friendly destination capable of drawing both locals and tourists.
Originally designed for Nowingi Place, the adventure playspace was moved to Jaycee Park following the 2022 flood event. The new site sits safely above historical flood levels, but the park’s layout means Council must decide whether to keep or relocate the large K175 engine that has occupied the space for decades.
Why Move the K175?
Council says removing the locomotive would free up significant room for open recreation space, improved landscaping, and large-scale play equipment — essential components of a modern regional playspace.
It could also open the door to more community events and gatherings within the park, while improving accessibility and the flow of foot traffic through the riverfront precinct.
The locomotive’s historical value isn’t being dismissed, with Council exploring future locations where it can be preserved and more appropriately interpreted.
Community Invited to Have a Say
Residents can now provide feedback until 16 January 2026, with Council eager to hear whether the community supports relocating the K175, keeping it on-site, or integrating it differently within the playspace design.
Kids are also being encouraged to participate through the “Children’s Voice” design competition, offering younger locals the chance to contribute ideas and win prizes.
A Tourism Boost on the Horizon
Tourism operators are watching the proposal closely. A large, inclusive, regional-quality playspace at Jaycee Park — just steps from the riverfront, the arts precinct and Mildura’s CBD — could significantly lift the area’s appeal to visiting families.
Modern play infrastructure is a key driver for regional tourism, and Council expects the upgraded park to encourage longer stays and higher visitation, especially if paired with improved event spaces and better riverfront connectivity.
Whether the K175 remains or moves, the redevelopment has the potential to transform Jaycee Park into one of Mildura’s most vibrant and visited public spaces.
